Assessment TME 24/09/11

Freddie,

WWW: You have a good entry on the audience research questionnaire. You've included the questionnaire and then, most importantly explained what it is, how you made it and how you intend to use it in your research. Well done!

Good analysis of the album covers with some good insight.

You have made some good progress, and there is certainly some effort being put in here. I like your use of moving image clips to illustrate the Bordwell and Thompson theories (Just make sure you also have the writing to back it up).

EBI: Record Label Entry: Just add a little more explanation about the nature of each of the labels, i.e., do they focus on a specific genre of music, or are they more generalist.

You still need to work on the conventions of the heavy metal music videos, obviously also including visual material.

There needs to be a bit more explanation of the editing theories. Explain what it is that each of the theorist is doing. E.g.. "Bordwell and Thompson examined predominately Hollywood film and identified various elements within the editing."

Make sure you finish all the unfinished entries. There are quite a few which still need work.

audience research

This is my questionnaire that I made by using google forms. the first two is helping me to find out who my the audience is. the third question is letting me know what people would like to see in the video and if I need to more of a story based video or more the band playing. the fourth question is helping me the think about the content of the video, what will people wear, do i want to be making a massage, ect. the fifth question is helping me with when I should be aiming to realist the song to improve product sales, e.g. people get paid at the end of the mouth, so are more likely to buy things. the sixth question will help me by letting me know where people get the music, giving a demographic to aim at. the seventh question is giving me a idea of where people will find out about music, this will let me know where I should be advertising my product. the eighth and ninth question are helping with content, if more people like to go to gigs I will reflect this in my video. the final question Is helping with inflames, if more people like one kind of band I can get some ideas of what they are done and think about how i change change them into thing i can use in my video.

Advertisement research

The art style is very simple and clear, the text is in the same style as the logo so that is all looks the same. By putting the logo right in the middle helps to draw attention to the ad and helps people to recognize what band the ad is talking about. The album releases date is at the beginning of the month, this could be because people will have some extra cash as they have been paid a few days before. Also, it says that there is some kind of unlock-able art work that you can get if you buy the CD; but it does say at the bottom that the album is available. This allow them to sell there product to a wide range of people, but are pushing people toward the CD version as it has extra content.

This is a very busy ad, with lots of different things in the background; this seems to be the art work for the album cover but could able be used to draw attention to the ad. By putting the name of the band at an angle makes it look bigger making it a lot more eye caching. Then at the bottom they have the name of the album, the date and how you can buy the song. The album is coming out at the end of the mouth, when people are more likely to have money as they would be paid within a few days of the release. The song is being released on a number of different of mediums e.g. CD, LP and DD; this is to help in the sales of their product by giving people a range of ways to listen to their music. Then near the bottom their is a exasperate of a review about the album, this is to show people that there music is like by the critic.

This is a very interesting ad, as rather then the last two this on has the whole band in the picture and their is no color at all. The text is very simple and looks very uniformed, which could go with the style of the band and their music; also going with the general style of the picture. Then at the bottom they have put the release date and that is it, nothing about what mediums it is on; but this could also go with their style in some way that they don't need to tell people because they should know already.

CD cover research

this cover is very dark and eerie, this is very stereotypical to the grean of music; as it give a idea of the darker content of the music on the album. by using a white, all caps and simple text, it sticks out a lot more against the dark background; this could be a idea that the songs may be dark but there is some kind of light which shows up in all the songs. also, the bands name is in big red letters; also in all caps. by using this red colour this could show that  the songs contain a violence vibe to them, which could point to some issies that the songs may relate to.

This cover is is very urban, as the background seems to be a old warehouse; giving an image of grim and dart that time has brunt to the place. from this image you can tell that the bands style is very violent, you can tell this by the tape on the end of the mic; the only reason that would be there would be because the singing has pulled the wire out of the mic and has use some tape to fix it. the text is very interesting as it has a complex style, as the text looks as if it is made of tape, you can see this on the end of the "A" and the "K"in the word "ASKING", but at the same time the is a cut thought both of the words gives it a dynamic style. Also, by using big white, all caps letters makes very eye caching and easy to see in a rack of music. but the name of the album is very hard to see as it is on a dark background.

This cover is is mainly aimed at the band and their the image they portray. The image makes it very easy to see what instruments the band members play, as they are standing right next to them; except the drummer who is sitting down next to a drum. The cover seems to have a very wasted down yellow look to it, giving the image a swampy look; going with the background to the image. also, by using the swamp background helps people to know where the band comes from and the style of there music; this is the southern states of america which is very swampy due to the amount of water moving thought the area into the gulf of mexico. this gives the image a more natural feel, like the band what people to know that there music is natural and is not massively over produced like more modern music. The text at the top of the image is in a old faction style, going with the area that their music originates; the southern styles are know to be very similar to the old english styles from back when england control america. also it is very gothic, going with the general idea of rock music. The text at the bottom of the image is very different to the top, it is a lot ruffle and looks hand draw. The symbols on ether side of the text makes me think of the voodoo styles that the southern states have been know for.

conventions of metal music videos

The main conventions of metal music videos:

  • dark colours, leather and studded cloths

  • the whole band plays their instruments in the video

  • consecration on the singer

Low Budget Ideas

this video is very good because it is very stereotypical to their grena of music. the use of dancing allows them to make video a bit more interesting, as otherwise they would be most likely just be standing around doing nothing. also, by placing them is different location will keep up the viewers interest. I thought that there use of lighting at the beginning of the video was very good, as this makes it look very professional. their lip syncing is very good, but there do have a few start up problems. over all this video keeps to it's conventions very well, making it a very good video.

This is very good video because of it's use of different types of shot types and editing. for example the use of rhythmic editing is very good and make it to early understand how the video is moving on. an other good point is the range of different types of shots, this makes sure that there will not be any kind of viewer figitg. also, the con ten is very interesting and provokes many images in the mode making it very enjoyable. but there is some negative points, for example there was not all of lip syncing; to make it a little for conventual they could of done a bit more of this. over all this video makes it on kinds of ideas of what there converts to be but this also helps to keep interesting, as people what to know what is happing next; this make the video very good.

Theories 3 - Goodwin’s

Illustration
Music: always on the beat.
lyrics: images illustrate the literal meaning or feeling of the lyrics, often just with the band singing and dancing.
Band Image: the band area, band-singing, dancing/playing instruments. dressed as would be expected.

Amplification
Music: film cuts on the beat but also off to emphasise features.
Lyrics: images amplify the lyrics a specific narration maybe use that would not necessarily.
Band image: the band take on fictional roles in the narrative.

Disjuncture
Music: film cuts off the beat
Lyrics: images which do not relate to the lyrics are used by well know bands
Band Image: the bands takes which is similar or completely opposite to their usual image.

Theories 1 - Bordwell and Thompsons

Graphic:

  • Graphic Match: Linkage of shots by graphic similarities.

  • Graphic Continuity: ‘Centre of interest constant throughout cuts, maintaining lighting level, avoiding strong colour clashes’.

  • Graphic Discontinuity: contracts colorr and footage types, movement and stillness.

Rhythmic:

Considers duration of shots – the length of each in relation and its pattern involving accent, beat and tempo. Specific emphasis on particular shots giving different effects.

  • All shots the same approx length = Steady metrical beat

Spatial:
concerns film space
  • continuity editing
  • the "kweshor effect" leads to the inference of a signal location.
  • cross cutting

Temporal:

Concerns time of action and contributes to the plot manipulation of the story time -order, e.g. flash backs

Ellipisis: something we don't need to see

Theories 2 - Vernallis’

Vernallis' analyzed editing in music video and hollywood film. she identified distinct approaches to each.

this is what she found:
Music Video
Hollywood Film
Multiplicity of incomplete sometimes obscure
Simply clear paths thought the film’s world
Order of shots, unconventional shifts more freely between shots
Order of shots, going with story
Time space, character and narrative are revealed incompletely
Shots will finish in the same place they stared
Discontinuity – draws away from the narrative of the video.
Continuity – draws us to the narrative
Visual hooks

Sometimes all elements are equal

Genre research 1

from these images it is very clear of the style of rock/metal music. e.g. lots of black and dark colors, very abstract and over the top, very violent, headbanging, references to the devil or evil gods, really big drums kits and guitars are the main focus.

Genre research 2

1) Five member rock set up, which is very common in metal bands as the will have both a lead and rhythm guitarists.
2) Mainly seeing the band play, this is very common in metal music as music in mainly forced on what the band is playing rather then what the band is like.
3) metal stops are used, this is when the guitars will stop and come back in without and distance to give the music a harder feel.

1) black outfits, leather and sliver studs are the most stereotypical style of clothing for this kind of music.
2) gothic make-up, this is also very stereotypical to the kind of music
3) double bass drum, this is found mail in metal music as it give the music it's speed.

1) custom stage, this give the makes of the video a easy place to set the band. also, this kind of music is played mainly live; so gives it that kind of live feel.
2) wall of speakers, this very common on classic rock bands videos; as it makes the band look like the band  is making a lot of noise.

1) gothic is a very common style to use in metal videos, as it is the most suitable style to the content of the music.
2) screaming type lyrics, this is used to sound the anger of the signer and the intent of the lyrics.

1) shouting type lyrics, sound the anger of the signer and the intent of the lyrics
2) metal stops, this make the music more interesting and gives something to cut off of.

metal vid analsis 3: dead by april: losing you

editing
This video has lots of different and instructing types of editing e.g. cross devolve/layering, change of focus, speeding up and down the footage, ect. cross devolve is used a lot in this video to show different images in one shot, for example, right at the begining they use it to show the confusstion of the main charter (see clip below).
camera work
There is a big range of camera shot, angles and movements. for example, the most common movement of the camera in this video is tracking, this is because the band's stage has been set in the middle of the room and they have built the track around them, this allows them to film the whole song from multiple angles and at different speeds; but keeping the shots steady and clear.

me-en-scene
This video is very dark and, at some points, confusing because they have had the video as if it is inside the mind of the main charter. for example, one of the scenes is in blank room that is set up like a court and all them members but one are him-self;  this could mean that he is judging him-self about what he has done to this girl.

sound
the only sound in the whole video is just the main song, no extra sounds.

metal vid analsis 2: Andrew W.K.: party hard

editing
this video has a range of different types of editing used on it. that different points in the video the size of the screen suddenly changes, also the colour, i am not sure what is technique is called but it is very effective (see clip 1). also at different points in the video a shot is rewound, this is strange but interesting (i am not sure what to say about this) (see clip 2).  by using all of these strange effects, it gives the idea that we are watching this drunk; as the lyrics state that they to "party hard" which invols a lot of drinking.
clip 1
clip 2

camera work
this video is mainly had up of extreme close-ups, close-ups, mid shots and low angle shots. the low angle shots are used to make it seem as if we are in front of the stage watching the show. but it could be said that it give the band look more aggressive as the like to "party hard" each also include violence. the close shots are used to show the effort the band is putting into what they are playing.

me-en-scene
they are in a warehouse playing to no one, we think this because we never see an audience. by using the stage, it allows the band to set up as they would normally at a show. also, they all look really wet, this shows that they are working really hard while playing this song that they are sweating.
sound
that the beginning of the video, this is a lot of dialectic sounds, including a tape dripping, doing his shoe laces up, hitting his shoe, flicking the light switch and the lights turning on. then the rest is just the sound.

matel vid analsis 1: bullet for my valentine: hearts burst into fire

editing
in this video there is no fancy use of editing, they just use simple cuts. this could be because they know that they don't need lots of editing to make people enjoy there video, they just want to see the band play.

camera work
there is a range of camera shot and movements, eg close-ups, mid-shots, long shots and panning. there are so many different shot because they are film random moments in the show and back-stage. but not all the shots are random, some have been filmed for the video. (see clip)

me-en-scene
the video is filmed while the band is on tour of the uk and has used footage of their show to use in the video. They do this instead of filming a video standard video because it is cheaper and it shows more of the band as they preform rather then just what they look like in a normal video.
sound
the main sound in the video is the song playing. but right at the beginning, you can hear the fans outside chanting the bands name (see clip)

pop vid analsis 3: christina aguilera: candy man

editing
there is a few different styles of editing used in this video, including simple cuts and rhythmic cuts (see clip). this is used to keep the viewer interested and wants to see what else will happen in the video.

camera work
there is a range of different camera shots and angles used in this video, but the one used most of all is tracking. this is used to show off all the angles in the shot and helps to keep up with the movement of the sing. (see clip)

me-en-scene
the song is filmed in a army base and there is a preforming going on. they have used a army based because the lyrics referrer to a big strong man, stereotypically men in the army are big and strong due to their intense training.
sound
the only sound in the whole video is the main song.

pop vid analisis 2: katey perry: last friday night

editing
there is a lot going on in this video, so the shots are short and quick to reduce viewer fatigue. the average number of beats before the next shot was 2/3 beats, this shows the speed of this video; this can also be seen to show the heticns of video as they are having a party. there just two types of transitions between shots, a simple cut and a quick fade.

Sound
even though this is a music video, there is dialog both at the begining and end of the video. this dialog is just used to help to show the naritive of the video, as the main charted also doesn't know that has happen. other then the small amount of dialog there is no other use of sound but the musice for the video (see clip).

camera work
in this video there is a small range of camera shot, eg, close-ups, exstreme close-ups, mid shots and establish shot. the camera has little movement in the video, exsepte for the begining where there is a long panning shot; used to establish the area they are in (see clip).

me-en-scene

the video is based in a american sub-berb, this is show in the beginign of the vidoe with the long pan. for the state of the main chaters room, it is esay to see that is has been trashed due to some kind of party; this sets the story off for the rest of the video.

pop vid anlasis 1: bruno mars: lazy song

Editing
in this video that is not a lot of editing that can be easily seen, but the essayists are these sections where there hands cover the screen (see clip). at this point there must be some kind of cut to allow for errors. but because we can not see any of these cut, this show that video is very well edited so the cut can not be seen. this also gives the effect that there was not kind of editing done on the video and that is was done in one take, showing there skill that.

camera work (will change to proper word when spelling is found)
though out this video the camera doesn't move at all, it is fixed in one location. this is to give the effect that they are recording a video on a web cam, this could be because over the past few years YouTube had become a way for people to distribute there music.

me-en-scene
as said before the camera is fixed in one place of the scene behind doesn't change. It seems they are in a bedroom as there is a bed on the right hand side of the screen. also we can tell that he is at a computer filming this as he is on a Wheeler chair which are most commonly found when using a PC.

sound
mostly the only sound is this video is the song playing in the background that Bruno Mars is singing, but there is a small amount of dioject sound right at the begining of the video (see clip)
